Hundreds gather in socially-distanced prayer along Troost Avenue on Juneteenth in Kansas City

Hundreds of people gathered along Troost Avenue to participate in Pray on Troost, a peaceful call to prayer addressing racism, on Friday, June 19, 2020. They chose Troost as the place to pray because it represents “the most division in Kansas City,” Pastor Greg Ealey said. Troost is considered the unofficial color line of Kansas City’s segregated past.

Vigil held for Marcus Stone who was killed at 18th and Vine

Family and friends held a vigil for Marcus Stone who was shot and killed at 18th and Vine. Stone was identified by family members as Kansas City’s 88th victim of homicide this year. Keshawn Stone, 21, said his older brother was leaving a party when the shots rang out. “He was protecting everybody around him,” Keshawn Stone said. “He was protecting his friends, he told them to run.”

 
 
 

Building A Village

University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Breastfeeding Mothers' Support Group was created by Kacey Nelkin Pederson and strives to create a community among mothers at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The group meets bi-monthly and discusses breastfeeding and other challenges faced by new moms. For moms like Michelle Lopez, the group has helped them build a support system and form connections with other moms in the community.
